What Is Invisalign?

Invisalign refers to an orthodontic system based on removable aligners. According to the British Orthodontic Society, the Invisalign Clear Aligner system is an orthodontic system comprising removable aligners made of a clear and flexible material, making them inconspicuous and comfortable.

Clear aligners have become a popular treatment option worldwide owing to their several benefits compared to fixed braces. According to the manufacturers of Invisalign, over 17 million people have benefitted from this treatment option to enjoy a healthy and attractive smile

Is Invisalign For You?

  • Excessive Teeth Spacingthis is a condition in which there is too much spacing between the teeth, causing aesthetic and functional issues
  • Overcrowdingthis occurs due to limited space in the jaws, causing the teeth to become crowded. Overcrowding creates difficulty in teeth cleaning, and chewing, and also affects one’s facial aesthetics
  • Open Bitethis occurs when the upper and lower teeth do not mate when the mouth is closed. This typically causes one to “lisp” when speaking, in addition to creating an aesthetic problem.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Step 1: Clinical Examination and Treatment Planning

When you first visit your dentist to get Invisalign aligners, they will perform a detailed clinical examination. This involves inspecting all your teeth and examining their x-ray images and study models. This will allow them to identify the underlying issue and develop a treatment plan that is fully customised according to your dental needs.

Step 2: Wearing your Aligners

Your dentist will provide you with a set of numbered aligners sets. Each aligner set comprises two trays, one for each jaw. You will be asked to wear each aligner set over your teeth for about 1-2 weeks for at least 22 hours each day. Each aligner set is designed to gradually move your teeth and realign them.

Tooth movement begins as soon as you start wearing the aligners. However, it may take up to 1-2 months before you can see a remarkable improvement in the alignment of your teeth.

This way, each aligner set will bring you a step closer to the perfect smile you’ve always wanted. During this time, you will be asked for follow-up visits after every 3-4 weeks to monitor the progress of your treatment. You can also keep in touch with your dentist with the Virtual Care feature using your My Invisalign™ app.

Step 3: Preserving your Brand New Smile

By the time you have worn all your aligners, you will see that your teeth have become optimally aligned and there is a remarkable improvement in your facial aesthetics.  Enjoy your brand-new smile! But your treatment is not over yet. Your dentist wants to make sure that your teeth do not move back to their previous position. So, they will give you a removable or fixed appliance called a retainer. The function of a retainer is to consolidate your treatment and prevent your teeth from going back to their previous positions.

What are the Benefits of Invisalign Treatment?

  • InconspicuousInvisalign aligners are made of a transparent polymer that makes them virtually invisible when worn. This way, you can wear them to any gathering or event without worrying about your aligners being visible or affecting your smile.
  • ComfortableInvisalign aligners are made of propriety, flexible polymer that makes them considerably more comfortable to wear than braces. So, unlike braces, you don’t have to worry about soft tissue injuries or bruises.
  • No Dietary Restrictionswith Invisalign, there are no dietary restrictions. Simply remove your aligners before eating or drinking, and wear them back on once you’re done. So, eat all the apples, steaks, at the next buffet.
  • Oral Hygiene Maintenancepeople with braces often find it difficult to ensure optimal teeth cleaning. This is because the wire and the brackets prevent the toothbrush from cleaning all the tooth surfaces. But this problem is eliminated with Invisalign. You can remove your aligners while brushing or flossing and keep your teeth squeaky clean and pearly white!
